On positive characteristics of youth today in our communities, we need to know these young people better before we can come up with any conclusions. Young people are a wonderful individuals in the society.
Young people in our communities have or need to have a number of characteristics that should define them. Today, I will only discuss about 8 of them just to give a picture of these necessary individuals in our communities.

We shall discuss one after the other and see how these characteristics can help a young person on leading a better and happy life. These characteristics are also useful to parents and guardians as they can help young people on how to go about in life.
Self awareness
Self awareness is the first and indeed important characteristic that helps shape a human person in life. It is one of the skills needed in life, and it is part of essential life skills. When it comes to positive characteristics of youth today, the starting point is on knowing oneself. A young person needs to know himself / herself who is he, where does he come from, what is the history of his family. Moreover, a young person needs to know what are his strength and what are their weaknesses.
A young person needs to know how they can be able to channel their strength and weaknesses when it comes to selecting a career in life. When one knows himself better, then there is a good possibility of being able to select the right career in life and be productive in the society. While in most developed economies this practice has been common, in many developing countries it is still not being practiced at all. Therefore, having said that you realize that it is not the task of a young person alone to knowing oneself but rather an obligation of the society so as to have young people with positive characteristics of youth today and be more productive.
Willingness to learn
Willingness to learn is such an important characteristic that belongs to a human person. It is only human beings that are capable of learning, capable of rationalizing. That being the sense then, it is important for young persons to make use of this opportunity in various areas of their lives. In this part we suggest three areas that we encourage youth to learn from; in youth’s career’s development and in studies.
In studies
In studies, young persons can excel and become expert in a given field in life. To become whatever one wants to be in life, one needs to put efforts in studies. Through studies positive characteristics of youth today can be created when a young person is ready and is willing to learn to become what they want to become in life.
Studies give a person new knowledge that they did not possess; it is through the same that we have experts in all fields in life: engineering, medicine, philosophy, law, business, language, and much more.
In the career
when a young person is in a career, that is a already working, he can still become better than they are at a given state. Say one is a doctor in medicine; a doctor in medicine learns to become a doctor through a degree in medicine science. When, this young person finishes their studies then they become a doctor; a general practitioner.
Positive characteristics of youth today can be demonstrated through this young doctor who through willingness to learn can become a specialist through continuous learning. S/he can become an expert by learning what experts do through practicing and can also go for further studies say master in medicine and specialize on an area of their interest. It is possible to have a young person who is an expert through willingness to learn.
Team work spirit
Team work is an important characteristic that we individuals need to practice in life to have a happy life. Through team work a great achievement could be accomplished.
In studies
In studies the team work characteristic is needed. Young people need to be assisted so that they can work independently but also in a team work. The two aspects are necessary and important. As an independent thinker one creates their personal ideas that become useful in the society. In the team work spirit; they learn to cooperate with others in bringing out solution to problems facing our society today.
In career
In our globalized work in order for the society to have our children with positive characteristics of youth today, that is to have desired characteristics in life then we need independence and cooperation.
In a specific career both qualities of independence and cooperation are needed. One needs to be independent in order to bring out creative ideas and products. Cooperation which requires others just like in independence, can also help in bringing about new products and creativity.
Patience and flexibility
Patience and flexibility are necessary qualities that a human person needs in life and more especially in a life of a young person. In order for young persons to become successful in life, they need a number of issues.
One needs to have skills that enable them to work in a given field of their choice. They need to have the correct skills in order for them to obtain the desired results in life. When they have done all that is proposed for a successful person in their career then it is time for them to be patient. It is there that the patience and flexibility come in for youth and thus the positive characteristics of youth today count in.
Ability to encourage and motivate others
A young person needs to have the ability to encourage and motivate others to carry out different activities in life. It is not enough for a young person to be talented and stay with their talents without sharing with others. We should all remember that none of us lives for himself, we live for others just as we needed others assistance to come to the world.
Good verbal communication
They say when you open your mouth then we can be able to tell what kind of a person you are. Good verbal communication is necessary for a young person. No matter what career they possess, all young people need to have the right skills for being able to communicate with the world what they know.
Knowing something and staying quietly without telling others about it, is a bit selfish. One needs to announce to the world who they are and what they do in life.
Good listening skills
Listening is vital in life. By listening we get to know something we did not know before. The opposite of listening I think is talking. We talk by our mouth; we have one mouth. We listen by our ears; we have two ears. The numerical superiority shows the importance of the organ.
We are called to listen more than we talk and our young people if at at all we can be able to witness positive characteristics of youth today then we need more listening youth than talking youth. They are both necessary; talking and listening. We need to learn to strike the balance.
Being a role model
It is not enough for a young person to be good without influencing others. A well prepared young person and young person who has exceled in his field should be able to inspire others. We expect him to be a role model in the society where he lives.
In most cases one is a role model through good acts and not bad ones. It is through good characteristics that a young person can be able to succeed in life and influence others in life.
God fearing person
This is a bonus characteristic in life. In the modern world, most people are busy with perfection and searching for success in life. Young people for instance are busy searching for perfection in their career or else busy trying to accumulate as much wealth as possible.
While it is fine to accumulate as much wealth as possible, but it is important to know that we are entrusted with the wealth so that we also think of others especially those who do have much in life. It is possible to think that way only when we have consciousness of God in our life. God fearing is important as it reminds us that life here on Earth is not the end of it all, there could be life after this terrestrial life.
With faith in God it gives meaning to our life, otherwise life without faith in God makes hopeless. Hope is necessary to give meaning in life.
